Reconstructing past fisheries catches for large pelagic species in the Indian Ocean

چکیده

Comprehensive catch data are fundamental to support the sustainable management of large pelagic fisheries. However, reported by Indian Ocean Tuna Commission (IOTC) on behalf its member countries currently under-represent extent these fisheries in Ocean. We reconstructed catches species for from 1950 2020, aiming improve comprehensiveness existing and provide more ecologically relevant datasets research uses. 42 operating five major gear groups (longline, purse seine, gillnet, pole-and-line, other gears) Reconstructed were 30% higher than IOTC. demonstrated that distant-water fishing fleets historically dominated large-scale industrial but gradually replaced flagged rim countries. Our results also indicated an average discard rate ~14% over 1950-2020 period, primarily attributable extensive discarding practices associated with longline gillnet vessels. Reporting time has improved only tunas, whereas shark still remain under-reported, accounting 51% total unreported landings discards 2020. confirmed substantial taxonomic aggregation IOTC countries, masking important patterns trends further complicating exploited recommend substantially increased observer coverage far better stronger all statistics

Results of a short study on by-catches and discards in pelagic fisheries in Scotland \(UK\)

Observers were placed on pelagic vessels in the Scottish fisheries for mackerel (Scomber scombrus), herring (Clupea harengus), “maatje” herring (herring caught just before their first spawning) and argentines (Argentina silus) to monitor by-catch composition and discarding practices. A total of 67 days was spent at sea, 11 on the argentine fleet, 28 on the herring fleet, 12 on the “maatje” herr...

A Mathematical Model for Indian Ocean Circulation in Spherical Coordinate

In recent years, the Indian Ocean (IO) has been discovered to have a much larger impact on climate variability than previously thought. This paper reviews processes in which the IO is, or appears to be, actively involved. We begin the mathematical model with a pattern for summer monsoon winds. Three dimensional temperature and velocity fields are calculated analytically for the ocean forced by ...

Effects of ocean acidification on the larvae of a high-value pelagic fisheries species, mahi-mahi Coryphaena hippurus

Negative impacts of CO2-induced ocean acidification on marine organisms have proven to be variable both among and within taxa. For fishes, inconsistency confounds our ability to draw conclusions that apply across taxonomic groups and highlights the limitations of a nascent field with a narrow scope of study species. Here, we present data from a series of 3 experiments on the larvae of mahi-mahi...

Fisheries conservation on the high seas: linking conservation physiology and fisheries ecology for the management of large pelagic fishes

Populations of tunas, billfishes and pelagic sharks are fished at or over capacity in many regions of the world. They are captured by directed commercial and recreational fisheries (the latter of which often promote catch and release) or as incidental catch or bycatch in commercial fisheries. Population assessments of pelagic fishes typically incorporate catch-per-unit-effort time-series data f...
